1. Podział posadzek ze względu na miejsce zastosowania
Ze względu na miejsce zastosowania, posadzki z kamienia możemy podzielić na wewnętrzne i zewnętrzne. Pierwsze stosujemy wewnątrz budynku, np. w kuchni, salonie czy przedpokoju. Standardowo wykonywane są z płyt o grubości 2 cm, jednak w przypadku posadzek z wyjątkowo twardych gatunków kamieni, grubość ta może zostać zredukowana do 1 cm. Na posadzki wewnętrzne możemy zastosować również mniej twarde kamienie, jak np. marmur. Należy przy tym pamiętać, że jest on bardziej podatny na powstawanie zabrudzeń i przebarwień spowodowanych wnikaniem w jego powierzchnię kolorowych cieczy czy drobnych zanieczyszczeń.
Posadzki zewnętrzne narażone są na bardziej intensywną eksploatację, spowodowaną szczególnie przez pojazdy kołowe. Z tego względu muszą być wykonane z najbardziej wytrzymałych, twardych gatunków kamienia, np. kwarcytu i granitu. Ponadto płyty, z których powstają posadzki zewnętrzne powinny mieć co najmniej 3 cm grubości. Jeżeli po danej posadzce będą poruszały się bardzo ciężkie pojazdy, grubość tę należy jeszcze zwiększyć.
2. Podział posadzek ze względu na kształt zastosowanych płytek
- Posadzka układana z prostokątnych płytek o identycznych wymiarach, które mają dwa razy większą długość niż szerokość (np. znormalizowane wymiary płytek marmurowych powszechnie dostępnych na rynku wynoszą: 30×15, 40×20, 50×25 i 60×30 cm). To z nich wykonywana jest większość kamiennych posadzek, ponieważ są one najbardziej ekonomiczne. Podczas tworzenie prostokątnych płytek marnowane jest bowiem znacznie mniej materiału, niż w przypadku produkcji płytek kwadratowych.
- Posadzki wykonane z płytek o regularnym kształcie, ale różnych wymiarach. Układane są w powtarzający się wzory kompozycyjne. Aby podkreślić regularność modułów, płytki powinny być jednolicie zabarwione, a spoiny szersze niż w przypadku posadzki układanej z płytek o identycznych wymiarach.
- Posadzki wykonane zgodnie z zasadą „opus romanu” – powstają z prostokątnych lub kwadratowych płyt o różnych wymiarach, układanych w powtarzalny motyw, jednak nie ma tutaj zachowanego porządku geometrycznego. Wzór tworzy moduł o powierzchni od 2 do 5 m² i powielany jest w module sąsiadującym. Ten sposób ułożenia posadzki polecany szczególnie do dużych wnętrz.
- Posadzki ułożone zgodnie z zasadą „opus incertum” – określane również jako „wiejska mozaika”. Wykonywane są z wielokątnych, nieregularnych płyt o opiłowanych lub przyciętych krawędziach. Płyty układane są tak, aby spoiny między nimi miały podobną szerokość. Fugi mogą być przy tym szerokie i wyraźnie zaznaczone. Ułożenie posadzki typu „opus incertum” bardzo dobrze sprawdzi się w rustykalnych aranżacjach, a także na tarasie czy w ogrodzie.
